I know what you may be thinking. “Is this a real thing??” The answer to that is, ABSOLUTELY! Is your body in the “ideal” perfect shape? No. But in my opinion, the fact that you are caring a human inside of you does in fact mean that it IS in the perfect shape! Women were built for doing this. This is one thing that we can do that no man can. And it is a beautiful, beautiful thing!

I hear a lot of women who complain how miserable they are when they are full term or how anxious they are to get their body back to normal. Then after the baby is born most seem to actually miss their pregnant body. I think pregnancy affects our hormones and just health in general (nausea, back aches, heartburn, etc.) so much that we don’t even realize what a beautiful thing it is and how beautiful our bodies are.

Every extra pound of weight and every extra curve we gain just solidifies how physically strong we are for being capable of doing something so miraculous. We should try to make some time to embrace the beauty of the process and remind ourselves of just how badass we, as women, are.

A maternity boudoir session is a FABULOUS way to do this! Think about it this way. Ignore the fact that you have extra weight on your body. Focus on the benefits of pregnancy when it comes to your body. For starters, those breasts are filled out nicely and perfectly shaped. Not only that, pre-natal vitamins are GREAT for hair and nails, so they are likely on point. And everyone knows that pregnant women just have that certain glow about them. And lastly, that baby belly! It is such a beautiful thing that will not last forever. This is the perfect combination for a maternity boudoir session!

You can be a mom-to-be and still be sexy! Not only will a session like this give you a confidence boost on those days you are just tired of that body and want it to be over with. But it is also a wonderful way to get gorgeous images of such a special time in your life. It will remind you of how strong you are. It will remind you of the bond that you were making with that child before they even arrived. And that is only something only YOU can do!

Do yourself a favor and take some time during that long pregnancy and treat yourself to a unique experience to get you images that you will be sure to cherish for a lifetime!

Whether you are doing a solo boudoir photo session or a couples session, it can be difficult to prepare for your session beforehand to ensure that you get the results that you are looking for. Of course, communication with your photographer is key prior to the session, but Pinterest can be the key to helping you communicate what you are aiming for.

There is a plethora of boudoir images on Pinterest that could inspire you and help prepare for your session. Sure, you could bounce around a lot of different photography websites, but that can be time consuming for one, and all photographers have their own style of shooting. With Pinterest, you can simply type in things like “boudoir wardrobe ideas, boudoir posing ideas, couples boudoir poses, boudoir accessory ideas” and you will instantly have PLENTY of images to just scroll through all in one spot. See something that fits your style, taste or personality? Simply save the images or links and send them over to your photographer. This will give your photographer a general idea of what you are aiming for, as well as the type of poses you will be comfortable with.

Most photographers try to stray from mimicking other photographers’ work down to every detail. But actually visually showing them examples is a great way for the both of you to get on the same page. After all, this is YOUR session that you are investing in. You should be pleased with the overall experience and the finished images!

Does this mean that your photographer won’t suggest their own poses during the session? No. Most boudoir photographers have a great eye and may recognize potential poses that would help bring out your best assets through your poses. Are you required to do any poses that you aren’t comfortable with? Absolutely not! But it’s always nice to hear a professionals suggestions.

Lastly, Pinterest is great for preparing for your wardrobe. One of the biggest questions I get asked pertains to wardrobe suggestions. Pinterest can give you lots of ideas for lingerie, heels, accessories (such as jewelry), and other ideas to help make the session more personal using perhaps your SO’s button up shirt or favorite football team jersey.

If you feel you are having a hard time communicating exactly what you are looking for with this experience, or if you may even be unsure yourself because it something new to you, Pinterest would be a great place to start!

There are many times I have been asked what are best things to wear for boudoir photo session? In case you are unaware, there are many great items you can choose right out of your own closet. Not every item needs to be lingerie.

Choose at least one bra and panty set. Be sure to try on items to make sure they have a proper fit before your session. You may still have some lingerie from years ago that you just have not thrown out because it is still perfectly good…however, since you have not worn it in years, it may not fit the same. You could have either gained or lost a few pounds since then.

Bra tip: If you are a B or smaller find a bra that has lace around the top of the cup. It will make you look a whole size bigger in photos.

SOMETHING OF HIS

Bring something that belongs to your guy. One of his button-up shirts or even one of his ties are good options. If you or your guy are sports fans wear a sports jersey with some knee high socks. You could even take it a step further and order his favorite team jersey with your name on it or with some other type of phrase that fits the session. Be creative. The more you put into it, the more he will be blown away.

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

Have fun with your outfit choices and jewelry. (yes, don’t forget jewelry, more on that in a minute) You can choose bright colors and even be super wild by wearing mismatched bra and panties. Wear your favorite pair of cowgirl boots and cowgirl hat or if you think your guy would love you in a nurse’s outfit – go for it! Try out something totally off the wall and fun! It can make for a fun and creative photo.

IN THE CLOSET

Look through your closet for a see through or lace blouse, a soft sweater you can pull off your shoulders, a vest or sleeveless sweater. Any unique or cropped tops can be cute with panties too.

ALL ABOUT THE GIRLS

If you are smaller then a C cup be sure to bring the kind of bustier that has built in cups. (usually a corset does not have cups but I have seen a few bustiers without cups too). The bustiers without can make you look flat chested and we don’t want that!

LEGS, LEGS AND MORE LEGS

Almost every woman brings fishnets and/or thigh highs to her session. My number one suggestion is if you plan to wear them with a garter belt, buy the kind without the plastic stay ups. If you plan to not wear a garter then the plastic stay ups are a must.

MAKE A STATEMENT

Don’t forget jewelry A statement necklace can be cool for a few images and  Bring a few choices in earrings and rings as well. Long necklaces make for great props and short colorful pieces can add drama.

THREE INCHES OR MORE

And last but not least, don’t forget to bring some killer high heels! Nude heels can go with many outfit choices. Black heels are a staple. However, anything strappy, studded or with bling is a must bring. The higher the better. Try to stay away from platform and wedges for your shoot.

You do not have to spend loads of money on a whole “boudoir wardrobe.” So hit up your closet and your jewelry box and you may be surprised at the items that you find that are perfect for a boudoir session.
